Our Vision & Why We Started
We started Free Spirit Hostel because we wanted to create the kind of place we always wished we could find while traveling: a perfect blend of adventure, tranquility, and community. As travelers ourselves, we saw an opportunity to combine the best elements of a surf camp, a yoga retreat, and a digital nomad-friendly hostel right on a spectacular, uncrowded beach. Our vision is simple: to build a place where guests feel less like customers and more like family, sharing moments and building lifelong memories.

Direct Beachfront Access & The Best Surf: We are literally steps from one of Ecuador's most consistent surf breaks. You can check the waves from the hammock, grab your board, and be in the water in minutes.
Ocean-View Yoga Deck: Our dedicated yoga deck offers a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the Pacific. Daily classes here perfectly complement the physical demands of surfing.
The Digital Nomad Life: We understand the need to work. Our coworking space and reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi mean you don't have to choose between a remote career and a life of adventure.

Our Home: Puerto Engabao
We chose this property and the location of Puerto Engabao intentionally. Unlike the busy, party towns of the coast, Engabao is an authentic, small fishing village, a quiet, off-the-beaten-path slice of true Ecuadorian culture. This provides a tranquil, safe environment for guests and ensures the surf break is never overcrowded.
While the town itself is peaceful and focused on local life, we are the center of fun. We offer plenty of activities right here: our pool, beach volleyball, pool table, and bar are where the action is. For those looking to explore, the larger town of Playas is a short ride away for more traditional nightlife and amenities.
And yes, the sunsets are absolutely legendary, painting the entire sky over the Pacific every evening. It's the perfect way to end a day.
How to get here
Guayaquil is the nearest airport. To get here: By Taxi: We offer a taxi service directly from the Guayaquil airport for $70US ($80US between 10 pm-7 am). To book a taxi, please message us via Facebook or email. By Bus: From the Guayaquil bus terminal (terminal terrestre de Guayaquil), take a direct bus to Playas Villamil (directo), which usually leaves every 30 minutes with “Cooperativa Posorja or Cooperativa Villamil”. Watch out, the last bus leaves at 8 pm (if you miss it, you will easily find a taxi). Once you are in Playas, ask for the bus to Puerto Engabao, which stops like a block away, or take a taxi for 7$ to $8 US to our hostel. If you are coming from another part of Ecuador: - Quito, Baños, Cuenca, Mindo, Otavalo, or Cotopaxi: get yourself to Guayaquil and follow the instructions above. - Montañita, Olon, Ayampe, Puerto Lopez, Manta: take one of the direct buses from “Cooperativa Manglaralto” passing by the coast all the way from Manta to Playas, and follow the instructions above to get to the hostel from Playas.
