After moving to Sri Lanka in 2016 and, after a few years working in the tourism world, we opened Beachbums in 2022. A relaxed beachfront space where travellers, remote workers, and surfers can come together, share good times, and enjoy island life right by the ocean.

Coliving with us in Matara

Welcome to Beachbums Coliving, a laid-back beachside home in Madiha on Sri Lanka’s stunning south coast. Set right on the ocean, it’s a space for travellers, digital nomads, and surfers to slow down, connect with good people, and settle into the easy rhythm of island life.

Our place is spread across two buildings — Beachside and Palm Side — with a mix of private AC and non-AC rooms, plus a shared dorm. Whether you’re staying short term or planning to hang around longer, you can choose the setup and budget that suit you, unpack your bags, and ease into beach life.

For those balancing work and waves, our brand-new coworking space sits on the ground floor, just steps from the sand. Designed for easy focus without losing that holiday feel, it’s the kind of place where you can work a few hours, take a swim, then dive back in when inspiration strikes.

Expect open ocean views, salty air, and all the essentials to keep things simple and comfortable - including free tea, coffee, and filtered water throughout the day. At Beachbums, it’s all about good energy, shared moments, and living right by the sea — island living done right

Our remote working community

More than just accommodation, our beachside CoLiving house is a shared lifestyle. You’ll live alongside others who are drawn to the sun, the surf, and meeting new people. Whether you’re working remotely, exploring the area, or simply relaxing, you’ll find an easygoing community that feels like home.

Our Coworking Space

We’ve transformed our beachfront space into a relaxed coworking hub for remote workers who want to stay productive without giving up the beach lifestyle. Located on the ground floor and set directly on the sand, the workspace is only steps from the ocean—ideal for a quick swim or a barefoot reset between tasks.

Inside, you’ll have access to fast fiber Wi-Fi, comfortable office chairs, and complimentary tea, coffee, and water to keep you fueled. When it’s time to switch off, our private beach area is waiting, complete with sun loungers, beanbags, and a hammock shaded by palm trees.

Work a little. Swim a little. Repeat.

The Surf near Matara, Sri Lanka

Madiha Beach is one of those secret spots on the Sri Lankan south coast that’s definitely worth discovering! It’s a fantastic spot for intermediate to advanced surfers, while also being close to Weligama (the best spot beginner spot in Sri Lanka) and SK Town, making it a perfect base for anyone looking to catch some waves and explore.

At Madiha Surf Point, you’ll find amazing waves, with both right and left breaks sharing a channel about 200 meters apart. On it's day Madiha is one of the best spots on the South coast.

How to get here

Madiha is a small village situated just outside Matara city. Matara serves as a convenient transport hub in the southern region, making it highly accessible via public transport routes and a short drive from the south expressway. By Train Trains to Matara operate from Colombo Fort Station, which is the main railway station in Colombo. You will be traveling along the Coastal Line, also known as the Southern Line, which runs along Sri Lanka’s scenic southern coast. The train passes through popular destinations like Hikkaduwa, Galle, Weligama and Mirissa before reaching Matara. From here you can catch a tuk tuk to Madiha. By Bus If you prefer road travel over trains, buses offer a frequent and affordable way to reach Matara from Colombo and other parts of the island. There are several types of buses that operate from Colombo to Matara, with different levels of comfort, speed, and cost. We find the most convenient is the expressway bus. Expressway (Luxury) Buses: Fast and more comfortable, using the Southern Expressway (E01), bypassing most traffic. Air-conditioned, with reclining seats, and fewer stops. Travel Time: ~2.5 hours (from Colombo to Matara).
