Working Remotely in El Tunco

On the coastline of El Salvador, which is currently being developed under the name Surf City, you find the little surf town El Tunco. Surrounded by dozens of world-class surf breaks, El Tunco is highly popular amongst surfers, but it's also a big destination for backpackers making their way through Central America.

Like other popular surf towns, El Tunco has lots of great restaurants and bars. On top of this, it also has the local lunch and street food favorite Pupusas. Delicious and cheap, a Pupusa goes down amazing with the equally delicious local Suprema beer.

Although the safety situation at times has been an issue in El Salvador, in recent years this has changed. Nowadays El Salvador is one of the safest countries in Central America for remote work.

Another pro of El Tunco is that it's a very small town. This means that it's easy to get to know people and become part of the community. However, despite being a small town it is also quite lively. Especially during the weekends, when locals from the nearby capital and tourists alike enjoy the beachfront clubs and reggaeton rhythms until the sun starts rising.

Surfing in El Tunco

Surrounding El Tunco there is a great mix of surf spots. The most popular (and undoubtedly most crowded) is the amazing pointbreak of El Sunzal. This is in general a quite soft wave that sometimes can reach up to 300 meters, perfect for intermediate surfers. Besides El Sunzal you also have the fun and fast waves of Bocana and La Bocanita.

Staying in El Tunco you should definitely also explore the breaks around, which you can do if you have a car or don't mind grabbing the bus or an Uber. El Zonte has great waves and is also a more relaxed place to stay, while La Libertad also has amazing waves but instead more is a spot for a day trip.

Closer to the Honduran border you also have Las Flores and Punta Mango. About a 3 hours ride from El Tunco, but definitely well worth it.

Getting There

The easiest way to get to El Tunco is to fly into San Salvador. From San Salvador, it's only a 45-minute drive and you can easily book a shuttle or take an Uber. If want to have the freedom to explore the breaks around El Tunco it's also a great idea to rent a car.
