Reviews from other Digital Nomads and Remote Workers
Working Remotely in Arugam Bay
Tucked away on the east coast of Sri Lanka, you find the remote little surf town of Arugam Bay. If you’re a remote working surfer looking to spend some time in Sri Lanka from May to September, this is the place to be.
Besides amazing smooth waves, Arugam Bay also has a big beach party scene. If you’re not into partying, you can definitely also just enjoy the very chill beach vibe here. Thanks to its small-town atmosphere, it's easy to start recognizing faces and get to know the other remote workers and chilled-out people in the community.
Along the coastline around Arugam Bay, there is also amazing nature and wildlife, with monkeys and Elephants roaming around the lush jungle.
When it comes to working, there is currently one coworking space with great internet: Nomads Coworking Space. Besides this, the internet can be a bit spotty, so make sure to get one or a few good backup SIM cards.
Surfing in Arugam Bay
With plenty of different spots to choose from within a tuk tuk ride from the town, Arugam Bay is one of the most famous surf destinations in Sri Lanka. However, the only time to visit is between May and October. From November to March, you need to head to the south coast instead, since the onshore picks up and the spots around Arugam Bay stop working.
The most famous wave is Main point, it's a long perfectly peeling right-hand point break just in front of the town. Since it's such a good wave and the closest spot, it's of course also crowded. For less crowded spots, the further from the town the better, with Lighthouse and Okanda being the least crowded.
Getting There
The best way to get to Arugam Bay is a private taxi from the airport. However, there are also cheaper buses from Colombo via Ella.
