Working Remotely in Huanchaco

8 km north of Peru's third largest city, Trujillo, you find Huanchaco, one of the world's 12 surfing reserves.

If you're looking to work remotely from a small, laid-back South American surf town, Huanchaco is a great option. Together, the bars, restaurants, and cafés in this small beach town create a very nice vibe.

Here, everything is within a few minute's walk: highly consistent waves and great restaurants where you can sample delicious ceviche and drink pisco sour after an evening sesh. And once your stomach is happy, why not stroll down to the beach for a refreshing shaved ice with fresh fruit juice on top?

Surfing in Huanchaco

Depending on how you count, Huanchaco consists of 3 to 5 different surf breaks within a km just in front of the town. While some are suited to beginners, others pick up a lot more swell and are better for intermediate to advanced surfers.

The biggest waves of the year can be had from June to September, but Huanchaco is really a highly consistent spot with waves all year around, even in the summer.

Huanchaco is also the birthplace of Peru’s “Caballito de Totora. One of the humanities earliest known surf crafts, this ancestor to the modern SUP has been used by fishermen for both work and pleasure during the past 3000 years.

There are about a dozen surf schools and surf shops in Huanchaco.

Getting There

The easiest way is to fly into Trujillo airport, which only is a 5 min drive to Huanchaco. You can also take an overnight bus from Lima to Trujillo
